Despite hinging that one is not eligible to speak publicly, one should acknowledge that public speaking involves communicative skills, where one is empowered as it boosts one’s self-confidence, enables one to interact easily with people and it reflect one’s first impression in any occasion. The first advantage one can obtain from public speaking is that it improves one’s self-confidence. Most people are not aware that public speaking is a secret tool to boost self- confidence.

Just like taking baby steps to something, once can improves one’s speaking skills by giving simple speeches in school to begin with or give an intriguing, informative talk at a seniors activity center as this is a great way to gain self-confidence (Anonymous, n. D. ). Besides that, one can gain more confidence to help unleash the fear in speaking publicly. Usually, speakers will get cold feet as soon as they are about to present before a crowd. The butterflies in the stomach can actually benefit a speaker if the speaker is able to control stage fright. Nervousness is what keeps the adrenaline pumping and even the most practiced of speakers feel nervous. It’s how you deal with it that is important,” (Joseph, 2006 as cited in Shirttail, 2006). Consequently, to enable a person to speak publicly more naturally, one may practice in front of a mirror or tape oneself speaking in order to reflect on the areas that need adjustments (Anonymous, n. D. ). Furthermore, as self-confidence increases, the quality of speech conveyed increases. Hence, one should become more aware on some guidelines in speaking confidently to increase speech quality.

Williams, (n. D. , as cited in Ashcan, 2011) suggests a speaker to do some homework if he knows that he will be speaking at an event, beforehand. Lastly, do not be reluctant to practice more because “practice makes perfect”. In addition, public speaking enables one to interact easily with people. How? One could develop conversational ability by connecting with people effectively. This assists the enhancement of two-ways communication. Anonymous (2008) states that public speaking teaches one ways to communicate ideas precisely and evaluate listeners’ response.

Besides that, by learning to speak concisely, clearly and confidently, one is able one to send out meaningful messages. Anonymous (2008) proposes one to find an alternative to get the message out if one has something to spill as speaking in public provides the means to that end. Moreover, public speaking affects social life. For instance, socially introverted people are incredibly shy and have least self-confidence but as they learn to speak in public, they managed to be shy-free eventually.

Mitchell (2009) says that she was a shy growing person, had a handful of good friends and was much more into horses than human beings but public speaking has changed her. Once you get a better understanding of social dynamics it becomes a lot easier to broaden your social circle. “I was terrified of talking to anybody I didn’t know. But once I’d done a few speeches at Toastmasters, I realized that if I could talk to a group f people I didn’t know could also talk to one person I didn’t know.

The club atmosphere of Toastmasters also forced me to socialize” (Mitchell, 2009). Subsequently, public speaking improves career life due to ease of communication. “Those who can express their ideas and positions clearly often find themselves bumped up in line for promotions and a more high- profile job responsibilities” (Anonymous, 2008). In other words, public speaking will increase employability and visibility in workplace. Public speaking also reflects one’s first impression in any occasion.

This refers to how the audience would react towards a speaker at first glance. Body language which includes movements, postures, eye contacts and facial expressions indicates initial self-appearance. It is important for one to display proper body language starting from taking that short journey to the podium until the second you disappear to backstage. According to Choc and Fun (1998), “If you slouch and drape yourself over the lectern, the audience may feel that you are careless and you are not overly concerned about their reaction towards your speech”(p. 23).

The way you walk will influence the audiences’ reaction towards you before they can even hear your voice. Body movements and body gestures should be made use correctly as these will aid in the way one deliver one’s speech to draw the audiences’ attention. “Your movements and gestures are a part of the non-verbal impression your audience see. This impression will greatly affect the response of your audience to you, either encouraging or discouraging them from listening to you”, (Choc & Fun, 1998, p. 29). Furthermore, each body gesture has its own meaning when one is conveying one’s speech.

There are several common messages conveyed through different types of body language that are being seed in a speech aside from intercultural difference in body language interpretation. Choc and Fun( 1 998) suggest that raised eyebrows indicates the speakers sociability, appreciation for the attendance of his audience and an acceptance to any response that his audience might wish to make, whereas the action of nodding or shaking the head convey the speaker’s agreement or disagreement relating to a topic. Apart from criticizing a public speaker by how he moves, the audience also take high notice of his apparel.

Hence, it is important for one to wear the most suitable attire in public peaking in order to leave good impression upon one’s appearance. Sided (2005) notes that public speakers must dress well and comfortably as the audience will be making a first impression on him. In addition, Sided (2005) concludes that speech delivery also requires speakers to make sure that they are putting on proper clothe well-dressed so that the audience like them shortly as they have made a positive first impression of the speakers.

Generally, whether one is a male or a female, one should comply to a number of dressing advice. Keeping your clothes simple, dress appropriately, wear informally, leave out things which you normally put in your shirt or trouser pockets, wear suitable and comfortable footwear, wear in accordance to age, skin complexion and last but not least, choosing your outfit colors are the guidelines of which the speaker should follow when he speaks in public (Choc & Fun, 1998).
