Paper- Quoting and Paraphrasing APA Style Stephen Webster Abstract The following activity serves as an exercise in the application of APA style formatting for direct quotations and paraphrases. Following three examples of each, the manuscript flows into a brief evaluation of the resources retrieved from the NCU library, along with an assessment of the reference materials used to research APA style formatting. Finally, the steps taken to research the correct citation formats for the integrated quotes and paraphrases are outlined.

This exercise in the application of APA style formatting for direct quotations and paraphrases is followed by a brief evaluation of the resources retrieved from the NCU library. Inclusion of an abstract, properly utilized section headings, and properly formatted in-text citations are other important APA features used. Despite NCU’s acceptance of single spacing for works included in the references section, this exercise recognizes and incorporates the APA rules of double spacing. Included below is an assessment of the reference materials used to research APA style formatting. Lastly, an outline of the steps taken to research the correct citation formats for the integrated quotes and paraphrases is offered.

Quotations and Paraphrases Direct Quotes. Jaros (2010) asserts that “as markets become ever more global, deregulated, and competitive, strategic adaptability, which often translates into the implementation of new goals and change initiatives, is becoming a requirement for many organizations” (p. 79). Kotter (as cited in Jaros, 2010, p. 79) asserts that “managers who can get their subordinates to commit to new goals, programs, policies, and rocedures may stand a better chance of having critical business activities successfully implemented. ” Jaros (2010) asserts “the commitment to change (C2C) literature has arguably reached a critical mass… but such that a qualitative assessment of important studies and findings might be helpful to researchers” (p. 80). Paraphrases. Recommendations focus on establishing construct validity, measurement improvement, and development of a theoretical framework for how a C2C atmosphere evolves (Jaros, 2010, p. 0). Ultimately, a commitment to change strives to reflect an environment in which employees are not only made aware of a change, but also have the skills, the necessary empowerment, as well as the proper motivation to share the vision of the change in question (Jaros, 2010, p. 81). Implications of found results which are lastly discussed serve to provide recommendations for future research in the C2C area (Jaros, 2010, p. 80). Evaluation of Resources

The above activity stemmed from a simple article search from the NCU library, and APA style formatting which originated in the NCU writing center. A near overwhelming list of articles on organizational behavior can be quickly narrowed by selecting peer reviewed or full text which may add potency to an evaluation of the NCU library resources. Additionally, the choice to view only the abstract of a potential article helps reveal article dynamics more quickly by highlighting the article before a significant time is spent on the selection.

Various reference materials were used for APA formatting of the above activity including the APA Exposed video from the NCU Writing Center, the Publication manual of the American Psychological Association, and the APA formatting and style guide posted on the Purdue University OWL site. Each of these assets offers consistent interpretations of APA rules, easy to find explanations, and clear examples of various formatting. The OWL (2010) asserts that APA “makes it easier for readers to understand a text by providing a familiar structure they can follow (OWL, 2010, Style workshop ection, para. 5). It is the combination of techniques proposed by the above resources that may not only heighten a student’s understanding of APA formatting, but may ultimately help to fortify the pool of peer reviewed articles available. The following outlines the steps taken to research the citation formats for the above. I. Choose Desired Text A. Read and evaluate applicability of subject matter from articles related to organizational behavior from NCU library 1. Determine the number of words in the direct quote . if the passage has 40 words or more, format the quote as a long quote(OWL, 2010, Citation basics section, para. 5) II. Prepare 3 Direct Quotes A. Format a direct quote with the author’s name in the signal phrase 1. Apply appropriate APA guidelines a. include the author’s last name followed by the date of publication in parentheses in a signal phrase b. include page number for the reference preceded by “p. ” in parenthesis at the end of the quote, followed by a period (OWL, 2010, Citation basics section, para. 4) B.

Format a direct quote recognizing an indirect source with the author’s name of the primary source in the signal phrase 1. Apply appropriate APA guidelines a. include the author’s last name followed by the secondary source data in parentheses in a signal phrase b. include information about the secondary source in the reference list(Mages, 2009, Module 3, slide 6) C. Format text taken from the article using an ellipsis 1. Apply appropriate APA guidelines a. shorten quotes by removing extra information, use ellipsis points (… to indicate omitted text b. three ellipsis points indicates an in-sentence ellipsis, and four points for an ellipsis between two sentences (APA, p. 173) III. Prepare 3 Paraphrases A. Make reference to the author and year of publication in the in-text reference B.
