To best suit them, a number of stakeholders have gotten together and voiced their concerns grading the problematic areas such as the printing collisions, network and connection issues, and what type of cable would best to use to fix the problems, and they have addressed them to me so I can come up with a solution that will benefit the school. The overall goal here is to plan, design, and implement technology that will definitely improve the teaching and learning within the school as well as prepare students with the best learning experience needed.
The first area of concern I want to address is the print server. There were many collisions with printing within the school and it deeds to be managed somehow. The school is currently using a half duplex system when they need to be using a full duplex system, because with half duplex systems, you can only communicate one direction at a time. “Nodes sharing a half duplex connection are operating in the same collision domain.
This means that these nodes will compete for bus access, and their frames have the potential to collide with other frames on the network. Unless access to the bus is controlled at a higher level and highly synchronized across all the odes co-existing on the collision domain, collisions can occur and real-time communication is not guaranteed”. (Lie, J. 2000) So no mater how many jobs that they try to do, without a full duplex system, things will always collide, making it complicated for printing processes to function properly.
The school definitely needs a full-duplex system because it has many advantages, it runs in one direction at a time making it easier for people send and receive data at the same time, and it is more effective for the office which has lots of business going out. The next area of concern is the network issues. Two of my stakeholders feels that the network is not fast enough, and that there are some connectivity issues that need to be dealt with to keep things moving at a efficient speed.
Also, they feel that there might not be enough live connection ports in each class. Also there are not enough live connection ports in each class. Today, in my opinion and others know, wireless technology is the way to go. It could save money, and they would not have to worry about all of the cabling that has to be installed in the building. Within classrooms all students are using the same learning applications and they need a powerful WALL with a wireless router to provide faster speed to keep that lesson going and those applications available.
If they install ports in certain areas of the new building, think that they will get a better connection. As far as the network, my suggestion is to consider using a backbone. Backbone networks are generally made to allow the LANA to stay connected and they are generally capable of carrying more information. In the school, as such information that needs to be transferred back and forth, they need a network that will be sufficient to support it, and they also need the right setup.
Different schools have different wiring within their infrastructures from the past making it hard for them to connect due to network issues and this may be due to wiring. “For many schools with hubs or Ethernet/Fast Ethernet switches, a migration to advanced, higher performance multilayer switches will also be necessary. The reason is simple, with the growth Of multi-point traffic and the introduction of demanding, bandwidth-hungry applications, he network comes under more and more stress.
Inevitably, bandwidth and intelligence must be increased at the backbone of the network or at the top of the stack. For most Ethernet environments, a migration to a multilayer Gigabit Ethernet aggregation switch is the next logical step”. (Cisco, 2012) With the use of fiber optics today, the use of this particular switch will allow immediate connectivity between each floor of the building to a central switch granting connection from one end of the building to the other for network aggregation.
Using a Category 6 copper cabling with a support of 1 000 base would be great to use within the school because today fiber optic cable is a cable that transmits data faster over long distances, less signal degradation, and they are less expensive, due to these advantages this is why fiber optic cables are used in many industries within telecommunications and networking. In closing, feel that I have definitely addressed all of the stakeholders at Leonard Cooper Charter School concerns regarding the upgrading of their present network.
