Again, on line 18 Flores says that the birds re “free” to fly away from the boys, their neighborhood, and the poverty. Although the boys are still in their neighborhood, the reader can sense that the emphasis on freedom means that the boys are thinking about the birds’ freedom. The boys desire to have the same freedom the pigeons have to leave their poverty behind and escape. Flores uses her word choice and repetition in the poem “Street Corner Flight” to create a hopeful tone. Using words that focus on soaring, gliding and flying create a sense of happiness, joy and freedom.
