Other, and how they can achieve the kind of freedoms that they’re interested in. – Bill Gates” (Brainy Quote, 2015). Communication is more than just speaking with other individuals in order to get a point across. Nonverbal communication is also a big part of how individual’s points are taken.

If someone does not know how to project themselves physically in any communication atmosphere, chances re the listening audience will stop listen ing wholeheartedly. It is very difficult to follow a speech that speaker does not have faith in as well. There are many barriers that make communication between one another a challenge; for example, diversity, ethics, and technology just to name a few. Mass communication also plays a large roll in communicating but can also hinder the effectiveness of spreading information.

There are also other barriers that tend to be overlooked when talking about communication such as gender and mass communication. Individuals, at times, have a hard time looking past hether a person is male, female, or transgender in order to get their point across. Gender Differences Gender has been widely studied when it comes down to communication and how both men and women do so. Everyone has heard the saying that women speak more mindlessly than men and because of this a woman’s speech is assumed to be less assertive and lacking in power than a man’s speech.

However, this is certainly not true. “In one Toronto classroom, the males were found to speak 75-80% of the time (Gaskell, McLaren, & Novogrodsky, 1989)” (Meier, 1999). It has also been found that men tend to interrupt in onversations more so than women do and are also more competitive in conversation and communication. Men and women definitely communicate differently; however, this is not always a bad thing. Where men seem to be more task or goal oriented, women seem to give back more positive feedback especially in a group setting.

Even though women respond more to touch while communicating, men seem to be more Of the one’s who tend to do the touching. When communicating, whether it is with a group or one on one, men tend to use up more space than women do. Men sit with their knees pread and use wide hand gestures to get their point across while spending less time concerned with body language on their listeners faces. Women, on the other hand, use up less space and tend to keep themselves tucked in closer and are more tuned into their listeners expressions, reading them while they are conveying their messages.

Diversity Diversity in communication does not only deal with gender roles and how each is perceived but ethnicity and different cultures can be a barrier, especially dealing with different practices and languages. Every ethnic group as practices in which they follow according to communication, verbally and nonverbally. When communicating with people who have different cultural backgrounds, it is imperative to understand gestures, good and bad, so no one gets offended while trying to help the other to understand. However, some cultures rely more on what someone actually says versus their body language when saying it. By paying attention to what a culture values, we can get important clues about how to respond to commun ication messages, establish relationships, and avoid making embarrassing errors when nteracting with people from a given culture” (Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy, 2013). Having an open mind while communicating with individuals from different backgrounds will help to open new doors on both sides of the communication highway, making it easier to comprehend and understand the messages that are trying to be passed back and forth.

Diversity can have an impact of ethical decision making especially if individuals have different thoughts on what is socially acceptable in their culture. Ethics Ethical decision making is a big part of communication especially since it falls back on what we are taught is socially acceptable. In different parts of the world, moral standards are different and it is okay to accept and move on, even if we do not agree totally. However, depending upon where someone is in the world, or is visiting at the time, they should be aware of the ethical standards in that part of the country and how communication is affected, whether it is good or bad.

It is important to be able to adapt to different places ethical behavior, within reason, as to improve the value of communication (Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy, 2013). However, this does not mean completely abandon personal thoughts on ethical behavior, but it is a good dea to adapt messages so that they are understood by different people. “Ethical thinking involves the intricate process used to consider the impact of our actions on the individuals or institution we serve” (Chmielewski, 2004).

In this generation there are many self-centered people who could care less how their actions affect different people, but when trying to communicate with people with different cultural backgrounds it is very important to understand how your actions will affect them or the company they are working for. Some forms of technology remove the personal aspect of communication from ocial interactions. Ethically speaking, technology, in most cases, will help to enhance the decision-making process, however, it can also take the place of personal ethical principles just because it is easier to use.

Technology Technology has evolved so much of the years and has made it easier for us to communicate with others especially if they speak a foreign language that is not familiar. It is very easy to type an e-mail in English and use a computer program to translate it before sending it out to multiple people who speak different languages, and in return if an e-mail is received in an unfamiliar anguage it is just as easy to translate it back to English. However, there are many cultures that do not use technology in form of communication or at all in some cases.

Some countries cannot afford computes, phones, tablets, etc. In these cases, if someone is visiting it would be a big help to bring a dictionary in their language or even a tablet to help translate for them. Computer software has helped in awesome ways to help people with different cultural backgrounds to be able to communicate better. A CEO could hold a meeting with twenty different people from different backgrounds who peak different languages and each person can have his/her speech recorded in their own language for them to understand it. Communication with clients, lav?»yers and others has certainly changed, and the biggest change is the speed of those communications instantly, through e-mail or instant messenger programs. It’s fundamentally changed the nature of communications” (Simon, 2005). Mass Communication Mass Communications come in a variety of ways from television down to e- mails. These types of communications can reach out to many people at one time rather than individually, saving time and increasing productivity.

It is a very easy way to communicate and prioritize what is important especially in big companies. Being able to communicate quickly and effectively with many people of different backgrounds and languages at one time can also open up global communications and enables a company to flourish in more than one country at a time. Other popular mass communication mediums include conference calls via telephone or video, informational videos, or applications for cellular phones or tablets. Videos are also an increasingly popular way to communicate. Whether it be explaining the budget or providing an overview f the district, videos can either be recorded in English and a separate video in another language or, subtitles be displayed at the bottom of the screen” (Fordice, 2014). The beauty of anything will subtitles is that it can reach out to many people at one time without having to stop individually to have to explain and make sure everyone understands before moving on.

Mass communication efforts are not only beneficial in the corporate America; they are great for schools and the education process. Many schools have a high population of transfer students who speak English as a secondary language versus it being their primary language. There are also programs to help students learn languages other than English in school so they can travel or be fluent when communicating face-to-face in everyday life with other people. Communication has come a long way in means of diversity, ethics, technology, and mass communication styles.

Due to the many types of advances in communication, people all over the world are now able to communicate even if their languages differ. Thoughts on communication due to gender are ever changing as teachers are showing their students that each and every one can be just as assertive and profound as the next and it comes own to the ability to give a speech instead of whether someone is male, female or transgender. Diversity and ethical approaches are also being brought more into the limelight and are being explored by people in order to expand their thoughts on how the world turns.

It is a very special time to be communicating and learning for everyone involved because technology has pushed communication into the next phase of coming together as a whole instead of being separated solely because of language.
